Conservative Principles
February 7, 2008 — defieslogic (Views: 2212)A rather lengthy treatise by Russell Kirk called “Ten Conservative Principles” is a good read for those who wish to delve into the deeper contextual meanings of conservative thought. What follows here is my own adapation of practical conservative principles which are my own that guide my choices and decisions in more of a political setting. These are based upon my own belief system that has God at its center.
1. “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” From the United States Declaration of Independence. First and foremost (and isn’t it telling that the first word is “life”) the sanctity of life must be protected for those who cannot protect themselves. Second, liberty must mean personal liberty. Not liberty outside of the boundaries of law, but liberty in the sense of allowing people to pursue their dreams. If the environment for those two items flourishes in America, then there will be no obstacle to the pursuit of happiness.
2. Recognition of the family unit as a married male and female. And a constitutional amendment to make it a national and irrevocable status.
3. Smaller government. Less is better. Get government out of meddling in personal lives and limiting entrepreneurialism.
4. Fiscally austere federal government. Must cut to the bare bones, the cost of governing. Empower states and local governments to work out fiscal budgets and priorities where it makes sense.
5. Provide a strong defense of nation and national interests. Both here and across our borders.
6. Recognize the plurality of belief systems and foster a positive environment in which they can co-exist. The realization in this is that ultimate truth will prevail. No matter what belief structure is preferred, truth will always rise to the top.
7. Low taxation. The best way to generate income for federal and state budgets is to lower the tax rates which will open up avenues for the economy to roar to life.
8. Controlled and legal immigration. Yes, we welcome those who wish to make America their home, but not with an “open border” policy that promotes illegal status and further, places an undue burden of providing for those who, through illegal means, have moved into our country and are now demanding support services.
9. A sovereign and completely autonomous national governing order without influence from outside governing institutions. We have without question, be best governing system in the world. It must be unbridled and unfettered for it to thrive and survive. No other outside governing body or entity can lay claim to our ability to make decisions that further our national best interests.
